Blue Guide Ireland

This, the 9th edition of the Blue Guide Ireland (published in 2004), provides a comprehensive guide to the cultural heritage of Ireland - exploring the wealth of galleries, museums and taking an informed look at lively towns with flourishing arts scenes while giving advice on the best times to visit. The practical information section provides details of ferry sailings and river cruises, and the author’s choice of hotels, restaurants, cafés, bars and bookshops. The Guide also includes hundreds of sites of historic interest. There are informative descriptions of architectural styles, cashels and hill forts, Bronze Age wedge-tombs, Iron Age or early Christian Ogham stones, intricately carved High Crosses, beehive huts, Round Towers and medieval churches and castles.

The author, Brian Lalor has pursued a multi-disciplinary career in art, archaeology and architecture. He is the author of numerous books, including four on Dublin.

Blue Guides have long enjoyed a reputation as authoritative, accurate and detailed guidebooks. The series began with Blue Guide London in 1918. Findlay Muirhead, experienced English-language editor of the German-originated Baedeker guides, established the Blue Guides with his brother James, after the outbreak of the First World War meant the end of his association with the German firm. They decided to bind the books in blue to distinguish them from their red-jacketed rivals, Baedekers and Murray's Handbooks. Blue Guides Limited, a Somerset Books company, continues the tradition of publishing excellent guidebooks that respect the heritage of the Blue Guide series.
